A Horizontal Smoke Curtain is an Automatic Barrier / Curtain System that controls the movement of smoke in a building during a fire. It comprises fire resistant fabric fixed and tensioned between rollers mounted at either end of the void opening.

The rollers are driven by a tubular motor. The rollers are mounted and enclosed in a steel housing and the leading edge of the curtain has a supporting bar spanning between the side channels that retain the curtain.

It is activated from the fire detection system and horizontally closes the opening in the floor / ceiling.

When operated, the barrier is kept fully tensioned by the internal self-adjusting tensioning system. This unique mechanism automatically compensates for climate change, fabric stretch, cable stretch etc and does not rely on mechanical springs that age and wear causing variation. The system is fully tensioned in the operational position, and the barrier is retracted and stored within the housing when in the non- operational position.

Curtain
The EFP 1/1000 is a composite material of stainless steel mesh and woven glass fibre base fabric, coated in a specially developed reflective aluminium enriched polymer. Tested in accordance with BS 7346-3 and BS 476 Parts 6 & 7.

Bottom Rail
A box section bottom rail is attached to the curtain to assist downwards movement; When in the stored position the smoke curtain's bottom bar creates a slimline soffit, with no visible fixings for a clean, uncluttered appearance.

Roller
The smoke curtain fabric winds onto a tubular 70mm, 80mm or 100mm barrel of mild steel tube of sufficient diameter and wall thickness to resist deflection - mounted on endplate bearings.

Casing
Casings are manufactured from galvanized steel and are available in a range of sizes to fit various opening heights and widths. The barrel and curtain assembly is housed within the casing, and may be soffit or face fixed to the structure - either directly or by means of drop rods allowing services to be routed above.

Finish
Guides, bottom rail and casings are supplied as standard in galvanized steel, and are also available polyester powder coated in a range of standard RAL colours at extra cost.
